All Grown Up - James Fleres PDF Print E-mail

James-Fleres-newPerformance August 19th at 7PM
James began his career right here at The Broadway Grill. What started as audience participation turned into a full scale singing career. Preston Turner and the rest of the Pure Ecstasy gang brought James from singing from his seat to leading the song "My Girl", thrilling the crowd and gaining the attention of world famous pianist Ricardo Scales who was interested in working with James and maybe even helping him record an album. Although basketball was still his first priority - the music was creeping in. He sang at school events and told his mother he couldn't concentrate in class - because music was in his head all the time.

Masha Campagne PDF Print E-mail

Masha CampagnePerformance July 15th at 7PM

Born and raised in Moscow, Russia Campagne was immersed in Classical European tradition while studying cello and piano at the renowned Gnessin State Musical College. Diverse ethnic, cultural and creative atmosphere in Moscow during her ripening years inspired her to learn to play guitar and sing. Those early repertoire choices were Russian folk songs and City romances by Vertinsky, Okudjava and Makarevich.

Campagne’s musical family provided nurturing ground for her studies and encouraged an adventurous spirit by introducing diverse styles of music. At home she first heard LP records of Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson, and Miles Davis and the vocal stylings of Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and Carmen McCrae. “My grandfather, the greatest inspiration and a multi-reed player, introduced me to the world of Jazz. Playing nightly with his 25-piece band at the Moscow landmark ‘Metropol’ restaurant he would often bring me along to his gigs. The spontaneity and swinging energy of the music abducted my heart . . .” Campagne recalls.

While in high school Campagne discovered Brazilian Jazz. Those early influences were João Gilberto, Tom Jobim and Elis Regina. In Campagne’s words “Brazilian Jazz with its sophisticated harmonies, subtle dynamics and unaffected vocals were a major inspiration”.

In 1991, Campagne relocated to San Francisco, with its rich and varied musical heritage. She was soon fully immersed in the Jazz scene by joining the Foothill College Jazz vocal group ‘Fanfares’ which won first prize in 1995 Down Beat’s vocal Jazz competition.

In 2000, already a veteran performer Campagne stepped into the local San Francisco Brazilian music scene by teaming up with British guitarist Simon Butler to co-found the duo entitled “Cantando um Samba.” This collaboration resulted in a self-titled EP, which featured compositions by Tom Jobim, Tonhinho Horta and Joyce. The success of this release garnered extensive performance engagements at top San Francisco venues like Butterfly, Café do Brasil, Bubble Lounge and others.

Campagne’s passion for Brazilian music fully blossomed with her 2007 national debut release ‘Caminhos Cruzados’. A talented, intuitive musician she widely collaborates with Weber Iago, a brilliant Rio de Janeiro-raised pianist/arranger.
The record also features impressive cast of musicians such as Harvey Wainapel, David Belove, Carlos Oliveira, Paul van Wageningen and Michael Spiro.

Beginning with the San Francisco Boy's Chorus at the age of 7, Noah has shared the stage with Paul Robeson, Leontyne Price and Nat Cole. As his solo career advanced, he sang with Duke Ellington and has appeared in New York, Boston, London, Rome and Paris as well as a 6 month run at the Fairmont Hotel. Most recently he starred in A Tribute to Nat Cole.

Noah, since the age of 7, has delighted audiences with his marvelous voice. From 1953 to 1958 he sang as a soloist with the San Francisco Boy's Chorus under the direction of the late Madi Bacon, Noah had the privilege of performing in Carmen, Boris Gudenov, Turandot and soloing in La Boheme with the San Francisco Cosmopolitan Opera Company. The Boy's performed at the 1956 Republican convention in San Francisco sharing the stage with Nat Cole and Johnny Ray. Leontyne Price and Paul Robeson were two of the legends with whom the Boy's also combined.

In the late 50's Noah helped formed a Rock group called the Kings covering Ricky Nelson's "Lonesome Town" on a USO recording which went overseas to our troops stationed in Europe. By 1960 he was off on his own singing at various local venues, teen dances and school rallies. He began study with the respected Judy Davis. The highlight of his high school career was winning a coveted opportunity to audition at the world renowned "hungri i' nightclub . It was also during those years he was signed to a minor record label and performed on the bill with the "Shirelles". College years at Fisk University began more intense voice study under James Van Lowe and association with the Fisk University Choir and the famed Jubilee Singers. It was during this time that the choir sang with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Philharmonic and was the choir selected to do Porgy and Bess with the Nashville Symphony where Noah had a solo.

While attending Harvard Law, Noah resumed his singing career performing regularly in and around the Boston area at the "Point After", the "Ramada Inn on the Charles" and various other venues. It was during that period he was selected to solo with Duke Ellington in his Boston debut of his "Sacred Concert". Returning to San Francisco Noah was a regular at the "Sea Witch", "Cobb's Pub", the "Plantation Inn", "Roland's" the "Forbidden City" and other night spots. For ten years Noah was the soloist for the Walt Tolleson Big Band. In addition to his singing Noah was a talk Show host for many years on KGO radio as well as a television personality and wrote a syndicated print columnist for the Hearst Examiner. A favorite at Giants Games Noah along with collaborator Bob Voss wrote the opening day song for the Giants at then Pac Bell Park. The two collaborated for the dreamy anthem and official Ballad of the Golden Gate Bridge now poised for re-release in time for the Bridge's 70th anniversary this May.This version is produced by former Motown producer and writer Michael B. Sutton. Noah and Bob collaborated on a highly popular Christmas CD with two original songs Noah wrote for the production which merit annual local airplay.

Eddie Fisher has called him a "great singer" and George Shearing "loves his work".
